Indoor Lighting
You spend a lot of time indoors. That means you need strong, good lighting. The indoor lighting in your home needs to be up to par to keep your eyes, your mood, and your sanity safe.
If you’ve spent a lot of time in a dim, poorly lit home, you know how it can affect your mood, your eyesight, and your health. There’s nothing worse than walking through a dimly lit room and stepping on something because there isn’t a light fixture nearby.
Here at High Output Electric, we can change that. When you trust us with your indoor lighting needs, you’ll no longer have shadowy corners or poorly lit closets. We can take your home and transform it from a dim, annoying building into a bright and cheerful home.
What kinds of indoor lighting are there?
There are three main kinds of indoor lighting, with many more kinds beneath these. The main kinds of lighting are general/ambient, task lighting, and accent lighting.
General/ambient lighting:
Ambient lighting, often known as general lighting, is the kind of light that comes from main light fixtures. This includes light from chandeliers, ceiling mounted light fixtures, wall sconces, and recessed lights, among many others.
Every home will have some type of ambient lighting, but many homes don’t take full advantage of this light or provide enough fixtures. In order to feel as though your home is well lit and not always dim, you need to look at the sources of ambient light in your home and decide whether there are enough fixtures or not. If there aren’t enough ambient light sources, High Output Electric can help.
Task lighting:
Task lighting is often used to provide additional, stronger light in rooms that need it. Rooms that most often utilize task lighting are kitchens, bathrooms, and craft rooms where strong light is needed to properly take care of tasks. These tasks include chopping vegetables, sewing, and putting on makeup. Task lighting is extremely helpful for these activities and will help you see even the smallest details.
If you strain your eyes putting makeup on, cooking, or doing crafts, installing more task lights will greatly improve your ability to do these tasks and won’t hurt your eyes. High Output Electric can install any kind of task light that you want, wherever you want it.
Accent lighting:
Accent lighting is a concentrated light that draws the eye to a specific object or area. Accent lighting is often used to draw attention to artwork, bookcases, furniture, or collections. Not every home needs to incorporate accent lighting, but if you want to draw a visitor’s eye to a specific place, accent lighting is the way to do that.
If you’re a collector, accent lighting will help your collections stand out and be seen. Accent lighting is also a way to bring light into every corner of your home, leaving no dark or dim areas. If you want to incorporate accent lighting into your home, High Output Electric can help.

Outdoor Lighting
Outdoor lighting is something that some homeowners don’t think very much about. However, it’s definitely something you should give some serious thought to. There are many reasons to get adequate outdoor lights.
Why do you need outdoor lighting?
Don’t you hate walking through your yard blindly after dark and hoping you don’t crash into something or trip on a tuft of grass? Even carrying a flashlight comes with hazards and potential injury. With outdoor lighting, you can wander your yard with confidence, able to see everything.
It’s especially important to have outdoor lighting if you spend a lot of time outdoors in the evening and nighttime. If you like to host parties, barbecues, or just sit outside, it’s much better to be able to see what you are doing and have proper lighting outside your home.
It’s also important to have lighting at the front of your house. When walking up to your home in the dark, you want your family or guests to be able to see where they are going and get to your door safely. All too often, people trip on their way to a front door and hurt themselves. Many of these incidents can be avoided with adequate lighting.
What kinds of outdoor lighting are there?
There are many kinds of outdoor lighting. Outdoor lighting can be as simple as a light on the front or back door, although this won’t light up much of your yard and may still contribute to hazardous walks in the dark.
Some popular types of lighting include outdoor solar lights, outdoor string lights, outdoor light fixtures, outdoor wall lights, outdoor hanging lights, and outdoor post lights.
All of these will provide your yard, your guests, and your family with the necessary light for parties, barbecues, or games. If you like to sit in the backyard and watch the stars, these lights can be turned off and you can stargaze to your heart’s content.
Backyard lighting can actually be quite an art form. Some homeowners take very seriously their need for outside lighting and set up a beautiful space that provides plenty of light and design. Often, a setup like this includes hanging fairy lights, lamp posts, or string lights. You can get as creative as you want to with your outdoor lighting setup.

Recessed Lighting
Is your home dim or poorly lit? There are many ways to fix this problem, and one of the more popular ways is by installing recessed lighting.
What is recessed lighting and why is it so great?
Recessed lighting refers to light fixtures that are installed flush with the ceiling. Because recessed lighting takes up no room and doesn’t hang down, it is especially great in rooms with low ceilings. You don’t want to lose precious head space by installing a low hanging chandelier or light fixture. Instead, you can install recessed lighting and still have plenty of head space and a well-lit room.
Recessed lighting is stylish and functional. You don’t have to sacrifice space, light, or style when you choose to install recessed light fixtures. The only thing you may lose is design if you’re especially fond of beautiful chandeliers or hanging fixtures. However, you don’t have to install recessed lighting in every room, so you can still fill your need for hanging lights in other areas of your home. Recessed lighting is especially popular in kitchens, bathrooms, and offices.
What kind of recessed lighting is available?
Many homeowners choose to install recessed light fixtures, but that certainly doesn’t mean all recessed lighting is the same. To choose your recessed lighting, you’ll look at the housing, style, trim, bulbs, color, size, and shape.
For example, you can choose LED recessed lighting or regular recessed lighting. You can choose lighting that is flush with the ceiling or a few inches up into the ceiling. You can have a white base, a black one, or any color in between. You can have large recessed lighting or tiny ones.
There are outdoor recessed lighting options, kitchen recessed lighting options and options for any other room you desire.
After choosing how you want your lighting to look and in which rooms you want it to be, you’ll be ready to have it installed.
How much does it cost to install recessed lighting?
There are a couple of factors that will determine how much your recessed lighting project will cost.
Some of these factors are:
Generally speaking, you’ll probably spend at least one hundred dollars on a single recessed light fixture. This can add up quickly if you're installing a bunch of recessed lighting, but keep in mind the added head space, functionality, and beautiful design of your new light fixtures.
Who can install your recessed lighting?

Kitchen Lighting
Your kitchen is one of the most important areas of your home. It’s where you prepare meals for your family, where you make treats, and where you teach your children to cook. It’s a place of warmth and love and tasty food.
Because your kitchen is so important, you need to turn it into a place where you like to spend time. You’ll probably be in your kitchen a lot, and a nice, well-lit space will make spending time there much more enjoyable.
That’s right. You need a well-lit space to properly enjoy your kitchen. A well-lit space only comes from good lighting and adequate light fixtures. If your kitchen is dim and poorly lit, you’ll probably end up squinting as you prepare food, and nobody wants to spend a ton of time squinting at a pile of vegetables.
What kinds of kitchen light fixtures are there?
To fix your kitchen’s light problem, you can install more light fixtures or change out the light fixtures you have to ones that are more effective and are better suited for the space. This doesn’t have to be a difficult process, although many homeowners view it as such.
Many homeowners want to change their light situation, but never follow through because they’re worried about the cost or how long it will take. Don’t let this be you. If you want to make a change in your home, take charge of the project, and follow-through.
There are many different kinds of light fixtures that will work well in your kitchen. For example, your kitchen may include recessed lights, pendant lights, spotlights, hanging lamps, cabinet lights, track lights, and more.
Choosing the right combination of lights comes down to understanding your space and knowing what kind and how much light you need. There are so many options available that you may have trouble choosing what will be best for your kitchen. If you can’t decide, you can hire a designer or ask the electrician you’ll be hiring to install your kitchen lighting. Most electricians can make good suggestions because they understand the concept of space and design as it applies to electrical wires.
Why is it important to choose the right light fixture for your kitchen?
Different light fixtures serve different purposes. There are three different kinds of light fixtures: ambient, task lighting, and accent lighting. Each of these has a place in most kitchens, but it’s important to know the differences between them and understand how they will light up your kitchen space.
Ambient lighting refers to the main light fixtures that give the most, widely directed light in any room. For your kitchen, this would be a main light fixture that provides the most general light.
Task lighting refers to light fixtures that are meant specifically to help you accomplish a task. In your kitchen, this may be under-cabinet lights that allow you to see your counter clearly.
Accent lighting is directed light that draws attention to a specific area. Accent light is meant more for drawing attention to artwork, bookcases, or collections, and so may not have a place in your kitchen unless you want someone’s gaze drawn to a specific area.
Utilizing all of these light types will turn your kitchen into a well-lit paradise where you want to spend a lot of time.

Dimmer Switches
Most light switches have only two settings—on or off. However, these two settings often don’t accomplish what a homeowner wants.
Why should you install a dimmer light switch?
Isn’t it annoying in the morning when you wake up, your eyes aren’t yet adjusted to any kind of light, and you have to turn on the light switch? Your eyes are burned and it’s several minutes before you can open them without squinting. Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to worry about this?
With a dimmer switch, you don’t. A dimmer switch allows you to adjust the amount of light that comes from each light fixture. This means that rather than simply having an off or on switch, you can turn your dimmer switch to any level in between. Your room can be as dim or as bright as you want.
Instead of burning your retinas every morning, you can set your dimmer switch on very dim until your eyes adjust and then slowly raise it from there. This will save your eyes and help your morning go much smoother.
Dimmer light switches aren’t only useful in the morning. Have you ever been watching a movie, but need a little bit of light to see your soda or popcorn? It’s really annoying to have the lights on, but would be really great if those could just be a lot dimmer. Enter the dimmer switch. Now you can set the lights on dim and enjoy your movie, soda, and popcorn all at once.
Are there different kinds of dimmer switches?
Yes, there are different kinds of dimmer switches, and the kind you get depends on what kind of light fixture you’re dimming and the kind of light bulb it uses. The three main kinds of dimmer switch include resistive dimmers (for light bulbs with filaments inside), inductive dimmers (for low voltage bulbs or LED dimmer switches), and fluorescent dimmers (for fluorescent lights and some LED lights).
As you can see, knowing what kind of light bulb you will be dimming is important when you pick out your dimmer switch. You can ask an electrician for help choosing your dimmer light switch and for help with all your other lighting needs.
You can also choose between a single-pole dimmer and a 3 way dimmer switch. A single-pole dimmer means that you control the light and the dimmer with the same switch. A 3-way dimmer means that there are two switches- one that controls the light and one that controls the dimmer. To control your dimmer from two different places you’ll need a 3 way dimmer and a 3-way switch.

Custom Lighting
Have you noticed that the lighting in most homes is basically the same? There is almost always one source of ambient light per room, and occasionally an extra lamp or two sitting in the corners. Having only one or two sources of light in a room isn’t going to quite achieve the effect you want. If you want a bright, happy home where people feel cheerful, then this one source of light just isn’t going to cut it. The corners of the room will still be dim and uninviting, ruining any other attempt at brightness.
To fix this problem, you simply need to incorporate more light into your home’s design. This usually means adding more light fixtures. By designing your home’s light sources and changing the original layout, you will soon have custom lighting.
Why is custom lighting so great?
Custom lighting is a great idea if you’ve been frustrated in the past with your home’s lack of light, or if you want to highlight some of your home’s key features, or if you’re just looking for a change.
If your home is dim or uninviting, a way to fix that is by installing custom light fixtures. You can choose the kind of light you want, the kind of fixtures, and where you want them to go. By installing custom light fixtures, the light level in your home will go way up and you’ll be left with a cheerful, inviting atmosphere. That’s what most homeowners want, and custom lighting is a great way to make that happen.
If your home has some unique architectural features, a unique layout, or you just like to display cool items or artwork, you don’t want these features to be left in the dark. Every home is different, whether physically or just because of what’s inside, and you want your differences to shine. Instead of leaving that beautiful piece of art in a dim corner, you can install custom lighting and really make that thing pop.
If you’re looking for a change, installing custom lighting can help you find it. If you’ve lived in your home for a long time, you may be sick of seeing the same things every day with no variety. Well, by installing custom light fixtures, you’ll see things differently. There will be light where there was never light before, you won’t squint when you walk into a dim room, and you’ll be able to see clearly anywhere you go. Doesn’t that sound great?
There are many reasons why custom lighting is so great, but the biggest one is because you’re in charge. With custom lighting, everything is up to you. If you want a chandelier somewhere and a small dimmable light somewhere else, go for it. If you want a row of recessed light fixtures in the study and a line of wall sconces in the living room, that’s totally up to you. You can do whatever you want with your custom lighting, and that’s why so many homeowners love it.
